Many patients are wanting to discuss the treatment of acne scarring while they are in the middle of untreated or incompletely treated moderate to severe acne. We caution those people to wait until the acne is under control before seriously examing corrective treatment. Acne is a very inflammatory process and that inflammation with its accompaning redness, swelling, and irritation, make any scarring appear much worse.
After the acne is under control, there are many ways to treat the scarring. Deep pits may require excision and careful closure with fine sutures. Deep broad scars with sharp borders may require elevation and support with autologous dermal implants. Broad shallow scars with soft borders may respond to laser resurfacing.
Most patients have a variety of types of scars, and may require a combination of therapies. We will be happy to advise you on the best course of therapy.
